About Florida Assessments

What is the FAST? The Florida Assessment of Student Thinking, also known as FAST, is a statewide progress monitoring assessment that measures how well students have mastered the Benchmarks for Excellent Student Thinking (B.E.S.T.). In middle school, the FAST is administered in grades 6-8 ELAR and Math.

What is the SSA? The Statewide Science Assessment, or SSA, is a standardized test that measures how well students have mastered Florida’s State Academic Standards in science. In middle school, the SSA is administered to 8th grade students.

What is EOC? Florida End-of-Course (EOC) Assessments measure how well students have mastered the Florida’s State Academic Standards in certain courses. In middle school, the EOC is administered in 7th grade Civics.

There are three testing windows for the FAST, SSA, and EOC in Florida: fall, spring, and summer.

In the fall, middle school students take FAST mathematics and ELA between August and September, and the EOC assessments are given a little later in September and October.

In the winter, FAST mathematics, FAST ELA, and EOC assessments are given at some point between the beginning of December and end of January.

In the spring, FAST mathematics & ELA, EOC, and the SSA are given during the month of May.

Grades 6-8 take FAST ELA and mathematics exams. 8th grade students take the SSA in science, and 7th grade students take a Civics EOC exam.

How Do You Prepare for FAST, EOC, and SSA?

Start by reviewing the sample items, fact sheets, and testing resources on fldoe.org to understand the test’s content and structure. Then, create your own questions and assessments to help students with the topic they need to study. Progress Learning makes specific SAS and B.E.S.T aligned practice and exam review easy with a variety of tools for teachers, including a comprehensive assessment and assignment builder.

For middle school educators, your approach to SSA, EOC, and FAST test prep may vary by student and subject. Consider forming small groups, incorporating gamification into your instruction, or scheduling daily practice time to keep students engaged. By tailoring your teaching strategy to your students, you will improve their standards mastery and boost their test performance.
