What Is Progress Learning?

About New York State Assessments

Administered by the New York State Education Department, these assessments evaluate students’ proficiency in ELA, Science and Mathematics. They’re designed to measure how well students are mastering the learning standards that guide classroom instruction as well as serving as a valuable tool to help ensure students have the support needed to succeed.

As of spring 2024, all students in Grades 5 and 8 are required to take ELA, mathematics, and science tests via computer-based testing (CBT). Other grade levels have the option to use either computer-based testing or paper-based testing.

Students take the English Language Arts and Math assessments each spring in grades 3-8, while the Science assessment is administered only grades 5 and 8.

How Do You Prepare for New York State Assessments?

Students preparing for the New York State Grades 3–8 Tests in English Language Arts (ELA), Science and Mathematics should incorporate practice exams into their regular study routines. Educators can support this by aligning lessons with the New York State Learning Standards to ensure students are well-prepared. Students should also develop essential test-taking strategies, such as time management and stress reduction techniques.

The New York State Education Department (NYSED) provides practice tests and released items through their website, helping students and teachers become familiar with the structure and content of the exams. Teachers can use these resources alongside benchmark assessments and formative checkpoints to monitor progress and adjust instruction as needed throughout the school year.
