What You Get With Progress Learning
What is SBAC?
The Smarter Balanced Assessment Consortium (SBAC) is an assessment system used in multiple states, including California. It measures how well students have mastered Common Core standards in English language arts and mathematics. The tests are computer-based, computer-adaptive, and untimed.
What is CAST?
The California Science Test (CAST) is a science assessment that is part of California’s statewide assessment program, CAASPP. It measures how well students have mastered California Next Generation Science Standards and provides teachers, administrators, and families with insights into how their students are performing.
The SBAC is an adaptive computer test that is given in the spring in the state testing window between January and June. Local educational agencies choose their own testing window of 25 days within the state testing window.
The CAST is a computer based test that follows the same schedule as the SBAC.
SBAC: In middle school, the SBAC is administered in grades 6-8 ELA and Math.
CAST: In middle school, the CAST is administered in grade 8.
Start by reviewing the sample items and practice tests on the CAASPP website to understand the test’s content and structure. Then, create your own questions and assessments to help students with the topic they need to study. Progress Learning makes specific CCSS and NGSS aligned practice and exam review easy with a variety of tools for teachers, including a comprehensive assessment and assignment builder.
For middle school educators, your approach to SBAC and CAST test prep may vary by student and subject. Consider forming small groups, incorporating gamification into your instruction, or scheduling daily practice time to keep students engaged. By tailoring your teaching strategy to your students, you will improve their standards mastery and boost their test performance.
